How to open a DXF file.
To open a DXF file for free, use LibreCAD for 2D drawings or FreeCAD for 2D and 3D. Both run on Windows, Mac and Linux. AutoCAD and most paid CAD tools open DXF too.

- LibreCAD: light and simple, 2D only. Best for floor plans.
- FreeCAD: heavier, handles 2D and 3D.
Paid tools
AutoCAD, BricsCAD, DraftSight, Vectorworks and SketchUp Pro import DXF. Illustrator and Inkscape open it as vector art.
If it looks empty
Use "zoom to fit" or "zoom extents". The drawing is often there, just far from where the view starts.
If the size looks wrong
Check the units on import. Roommie DXF files are metric.

Can I convert DXF to DWG?
Yes. Open the DXF in a CAD tool and save as DWG.
Can I open DXF without installing anything?
Some online viewers show DXF files in the browser. For editing, install a CAD tool.
