Guide
How to measure a room for a floor plan.
To measure a room for a floor plan, sketch the shape, measure each wall from corner to corner, then mark where doors and windows start and how wide they are. Write everything in millimetres. It takes about ten minutes per room.

A tape or laser measure, paper and a pen.
Steps
Work around the room in one direction.
- Sketch the room shape from above.
- Measure each wall, corner to corner, at floor level.
- For each door and window, measure from the nearest corner to its edge, then its width.
- Note which way each door opens.
- Measure the ceiling height once.
- Mark fixed things: radiators, pipes, the fuse box.
Check your numbers
Opposite walls should be close to equal. If they differ by more than a few centimetres, measure again.
Turn it into a plan
Give Roommie the width and depth and where the door and windows are. It drafts the room to those sizes.
Questions
Should I measure in cm or mm?
Either works. Plans usually use millimetres, so 3.42 m is written 3420.
My walls are not square. What now?
Use the shorter measurement for planning furniture, so things are sure to fit.
