Guide

Typical room sizes, in square metres.

As a rule of thumb, a double bedroom is 10 to 14 m², a single bedroom 7 to 9 m², a kitchen 7 to 14 m², a bathroom 4 to 8 m² and a living room 16 to 30 m². These are typical figures for planning, not legal minimums.

Bedrooms

A double bed is about 1.6 by 2.0 m. Add walkways and a wardrobe and you need about 10 m² or more. A single bedroom works from about 7 m².

Kitchens

A one-wall kitchen can work in 7 m². A kitchen with a table or island needs 12 m² or more.

Bathrooms

A bathroom with a shower, toilet and basin fits in about 4 m². A bath and more storage push it to 6 to 8 m². A separate toilet needs 1 to 2 m².

Living rooms

A sofa, TV and a table for four fit in about 18 to 20 m². Open living and kitchen spaces often run 25 to 40 m².

Check local rules

Many places set legal minimum room sizes and ceiling heights. They differ by country and city. Ask a local professional before you build.

Questions

What is a good size for a 2-bed apartment?

Often 60 to 90 m². Below that, rooms get tight. Above that, you gain storage and a second bathroom.

Are these legal minimums?

No. They are planning rules of thumb. Legal minimums depend on where you build.
