Guide

How much space to leave around furniture.

Leave about 900 mm for a main walkway. Around that, the common rules of thumb are 600 to 700 mm beside a bed, 750 to 900 mm behind a dining chair, 400 to 450 mm between sofa and coffee table, and 1000 to 1200 mm between two kitchen runs.

Walkways

900 mm lets one person walk with ease and two people pass with a turn. 600 mm is a squeeze and only works for short, rarely used paths.

Beds

Leave 600 to 700 mm on each side you get in from, and at the foot if a path runs there.

Dining

A seated person needs about 750 mm from the table edge to pull the chair out. Use 900 mm or more if people walk behind.

Sofas

Keep 400 to 450 mm between the sofa and coffee table: close enough to reach, wide enough to pass.

Kitchens

Between two runs, or a run and an island, 1000 to 1200 mm lets you open doors and still pass.

Let the tool check

Roommie checks walkway clearance at 900 mm on every draft, so you see a problem before you buy the sofa.
